Alaska's Clean Elections Initiative
If you had suggested that this group of Alaskans would ever find a meeting of the minds, you would have been laughed out of the state. Instead, an interesting coalition of bipartisan citizens and leaders backed by a truly statewide grassroots group of dedicated Alaskans came together because of a common cause. The original group began looking at the states where Clean Elections was working - and at the states where the initiative process had failed. With careful research and a years of experience in Alaskan politics, the original team carefully sifted for gold in a pile of tailings.
Alaskans for Clean Elections submitted the Alaska Clean Elections Initiative to Lt. Gov. Parnell for approval in the summer of 2007. We began working very hard after we received our books at the end of August 2007.
Coincidentally, several other initiatives were working for signatures. With more money and a higher profile, they were able to contract many of the experienced (professional) signature gatherers. Alaskans for Clean Elections turned to our volunteers and asked for help. The response was overwhelming!
By January 14, 2008, we had, with the tremendous effort of our volunteer and some paid gatherers, gathered and submitted over 33,500 signatures. On March 11th, the Lt. Gov's office notified us that we were certified for the August 26th Primary Ballot!
August 26, 2008 is coming up fast. We encourage all our supporters to be sure they have registered and to make sure they vote!
